Hi everyone - was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on a problem with a new build.
To start off, I assembled all the components and everything seemed to be working fine. After installing Windows though, began to notice strange problems with anything plugged into the USB ports. OS would boot, but USB would not be activated for up to a minute after the OS loaded (mouse/keyboard, etc would not work). Went to sleep that night and the next morning the computer would start up but then reboot randomly after a few minutes. Sometimes it would restart after just a few seconds, before the BIOS even posted.
At this point I concluded it must be a problem with the motherboard, so I took it back to the store for an exchange. Got the new motherboard installed and the hardware seemed to be working much better from the outset. Reinstalled Windows, updated BIOS, got all new mobo drivers from website, etc. Everything seemed to be working great. Left the computer on overnight, and was still working great most of the next day, but towards the end of the day, same problem repeated itself. Computer randomly restarts after a few minutes, few seconds, etc.
I've tried starting it now with nothing connected except the boot drive and still have the same issue. I'm thinking it must be either a bad CPU or a bad PSU. Either way, it must be hardware related since sometimes it shuts down before the BIOS even loads.
One thing to note - I did do something which I now know is a big no-no. On the first go-around, I did power up the mobo without the CPU fan connected, but it was on for no more than 10-20 seconds. Since then I've read that a CPU can be fried in a couple of seconds. I think this could be the issue, but it's strange to me that the computer would run fine for a day and then start acting weird. I would think if the CPU is fried it would just be dead.
My next move is going to be to see if I can exchange the CPU. Does anyone have any ideas for other things this could be?
