My brother wants to upgrade his PC, and i'm helping him.. but i want to know what you think

Current system
AMD Phenom x4 II 955 BE
4GB @ 1333mhz
Some Asus AM3 board, which i don't know the exact name of (2 PCIe slots tho)
2x 4870HD
750W PSU antec
1TB @ 7200RPM

Now he wants to upgrade for gaming.. he also considers upgrading RAM to 8 or 16GB @ 1600..
But he would mostly like to upgrade the GPU's.. is this smart, or should you upgrade something else?

He is either buying a GTX 680 phantom 4GB from a friend, or a GTX 670 new..

It is a very smart decision. It will increase gaming performance a lot. It would not be smart to upgrade CPU, because it's quite decent. I take his CPU is already overclocked?

I would advice against going for 16 GB RAM - it's quite overkill, personally I haven't seen my RAM usage climb over 5.5 GB (when having 3 games open at the same time, Battlefield 3 was one of them). Though upgrading to 8 GB seems wise.

No, the CPU isn't overclocked, since the cooling was very bad.. always used stock cooler till now (ordered Arctic Freezer Pro 7 Rev.2 S775)

But besides that, he doesn't have any overclock experience, and doesnt even know where to start.. I'm also not very good at overclocking.. i'm trying to learn it in summerbreak..

I will advice him 8GB @1600 then. But i'm glad to hear the performance increase is a lot with upgrading GPU

Honestly that's not really a bad system at all. You can overclock the Phenom II to get some extra performance out of it, and a GTX 670 or 680 would certainly help.

8GB of DDR3 is plenty, though I don't think he'd get much extra kick from going up to DDR3-1600, so another 4GB kit of DDR3-1333 would probably be fine.

One of the biggest upgrades he could do would be to go for an SSD, though.

Yea I totally forgot SSD - it would boost performance A LOT.

Secondly, it would be wise getting an aftermarket cooler and OCing just a bit - there are plenty of guides online.

Already ordered an aftermarket cooler.. Will get another 2x2GB kit, to get him to 8GB @ 1333mhz..

He doesn't want to upgrade to SSD yet.. mostly because he has SATA II only..

thnx for the help :)
