6850 Vs OC 6870

Hey,

I was trying to decide between a 6870 900m

And a regular 6850

I will be running a 1080p 22 inch monitor.

I need a card that can play most games at mid-high settings with decent frames
Some games I hope to be playing are DiRT 3, Skyrim, Diablo 3, and some MMORPG's.

Currently i only have a CM EP+ 600 watt, so it needs to be able to run on (2) 18A 12V rails, along with my 2500k and MOBO, HD, etc.

The card also needs to be reliable.

Is the 6870 worth the extra $25? (Possible more, like $30-35 because you pay tax on the rebate)

Or is the 6870 the best for Price/Performance ratio?

Thanks

More about 6850 6870
  1. The 6870 is worth it for sure.
  2. 6870 is a great performer, if you can later add a second the crossfire is impressive.
  3. Performance wise, how much better will the performance be?
    Like in either frames or percentage.
  4. Yes it's worth $25. You get what you pay for.
  5. Alrite, than its definatly worth it.

    Will (2) 18A rails be enough for that plus a 2500k (and obvy a MOBO, HD, CD/DVD)?

    Because the 6870 is OC'd.

    A standard 6870 would use about 13A at 100% load so I think your fine:

    The clocks look pretty standard for the 6870 you have linked?
  7. Guru3D uses the following games in their test suite, COD-MW, Bad Company 2, Dirt 2, Far Cry 2, Metro 2033, Dawn of Discovery, Crysis Warhead. Total fps (summing fps in each game @ 1920 x 1200) for the various options in parenthesis (single card / SL or CF) are tabulated below along with their cost in dollars per frame single card - CF or SLI:

    $ 130.00 6850 (371/634) $ 0.35 - $ 0.41
    $ 155.00 6870 (434/701) $ 0.36 - $ 0.44

    The link you gave shows a core speed of 900 Mhz for the 6870 which is the "standard" clock rate. At least according to the data shown on that page, that card is not overclocked. The 6870 is 17% faster for a 19% speed increase.

    6870 costing ya $0.36 per frame
    6850 costing ya $0.35 per frame
  8. I HIGHLY recommend my own card - it has worked amazingly for me. A great stock-voltage overclocker, too. 980/1200 :)

    Thats weird. It's listed at the same speed as the regular but is marked as OC and claims to need 50 more watts (the system req is 550 instead of 500)

    Il double check with TD
