Is stress testing necessary?

On OC rigs, I can accept that it's necessary to check the performance and stability of an OC'd CPU or GPU.

But on a rig running on stock clocks, is it actually necessary to go through the rigmarole of running your CPU on Prime95 for hours. Or risking damage to your GPU running Furmark or similar.

Just wanted to see peoples opinions really, I for one don't intend to do it on my new build unless I attempt an OC.

For the most part I'd consider it optional, but possibly beneficial. If you have some component that is bad, then you find out about it pretty quickly, instead of possibly 2-3 months down the road after the warranty has potentially expired.
