I'm a French photographer specialized in dance photography. I'm presently
working for various festivals in Europe and North Africa and I would like to
find the opportunity to work for festivals and contemporary dance companies
in other places in the world (Americas (north and south), Asia...). I'm also
seeking to exchange with other dance photographers practising studio or
stage photography (personnally I practise the latter). Any contact, tip,
hint or even criticism or encouragement are welcome.
Do not hesitate in writing to me by mail, (remove the spaces in the address
please.)

He is her father and is protecting her from the paparazzo.
Either that or copping a feel isn't that big of a deal in France.

Yes, this pic may seem a bit strange. In fact the choregrapher perfoms in
the streets, He begins by playing the role of a normal person and little by
little starts dancing (in restaurants, bars, buses train stations etc.).
It's fun. When I took this pic, I had not noticed his hand on the lady's
bottom for the movement was quite fast, but when I saw the pic, I found it
funny. I decided to put the pic on the site as we can clearly see Bernard
Menaud's face (the dancer) who is quite known in French dance little world.

Excellent work!
That's always been an ambition of mine, to work with dancers. The movement
of bodies fascinates me...

So if you want to do so, you should do it. I started by knoking at dance
studios doors and asked if I could shoot the rehearsals and courses. never
found a closed door.

I have tried to photograph dancers, but it is very hard I found and with
one group I gave up doing stills and just video tape them now.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for your post.
In deed it's hard to make pictures of dance. I've watched all your pictures
and paid particular attention to dance ones. There is one I like
(composition, framing, colors) :
http://photos.timchuma.com/DeltasN [...] oto39.html .
For the others, I would say that the main problems are :
- Flash : you are mostly using the flash, that kills the ambient of the
scene
- spotlight colors : there are many pictures with red and yellow projections
due to the spotlights. These 2 colors give very bad effects on the pictures.
When there are such lightings, it is better to make sepia or black and white
pics with photoshop (channel mixer).
- Stability : you should use a tripod in low light conditions
- Framing, and composition : in performances where there are many dancers
and objects on the stage, it is better to frame on one single subject, so as
to avoid any other parasitic things in the frame. will give cleaner images,
and purer movement impressions.
Don't thake this for a lesson, but if all or some fo these tips can help not
to discourage you to practise dance photography, then that will be a good
thing.

Thanks for the advice, I will look into getting a tripod as I was thinking
the same thing myself. Also for some photos I have been experimenting with
the Curves in Photoshop to try and make them stand out.
