I've been having this error pop up "Display driver has stopped working and recovered" which normals involves my game or screen freezing for a second or two and then resuming as normal. This problem was happening when I was using my 8800gt and i decided to get a new video card thinking something might be wrong with that one... I bought a new 6950 and after a day and a half this error happens again. I have the current drivers for my card and the past ones removed.
Sometimes the screen stops without even the error coming up. This is really annoying and ive looked everywhere and haven't found anything helpful.
Also this happens in games and out. I've monitored my temperatures using HWMonitor and they are fine.

Current System
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955
MOBO: ASRock 970 Extreme3
RAM: 8g 1333 G. Skill
Video: Radeon HD 6950
PSU: BFG 550 watt

Unfortunately there is really no know fix for this issue.

Usually re-installing windows will fix it.

Yea, it seems to happen with AMD cards for some unknown reason.

Sometimes updating the video driver may help. You may have a background task that is taking all of the processing power, try using msconfig to temporarily disable all startup items.

There are literally hundreds of forums dedicated to this issue with both AMD and Nvidia cards. The Nvidia display driver has recovered error is "nvlddmkm". Google it.
