This is my dream comp :

ASUS A7V266 - Chipset VIA KT266
AMD Palomino 1.2 GHz 133/266 MHz FSB (Socket A)*
Swiftech MC462 Cooler
Crucial DDR RAM 512 MB CL 2 (DIMM)*
Gainward GeForce 3 64 MB DDR RAM (AGP)
Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer (PCI)
Seagate Cheetah X15 18.4 GB 15000 RPM (SCSI)
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer (USB)
Microsoft Internet Keyboard (USB)
Any 1.44 MB 3.5" Disk Drive

DVD-ROM?
CD-R/RW?
Monitor?

I need an advice regarding the fastest DVD-ROM on the market. Also, is a DVD ROM and a GeForce 3 enough to be able to watch DVD movies? Do I need another special card/component to achieve the task?

Thank you!

Hmm, everybody seems to recommend the Pioneer 16x drive, which is relatively cheap yet fast and reliable. A GeForce3 and a 1.2GHz Athlon is more than enough for smooth DVD playback full screen, however, from my experience, that setup may not guarantee smooth playback if you're watching DVDs in a small window and doing other tasks. I recommend a DVD decoder card if you want to do that.

AMD technology + Intel technology = Intel/AMD Pentathlon IV; the ULTIMATE PC processor

The Pioneer 16x is a great drive, as is the Toshibas.

Yup, that's a good choice. Though you said money isn't a problem, that one offers great value and performance at the same time.

I recommend a DVD decoder card if you want to do that.

GeForce 2s and up (as well as many Radeons, don't know which ones), have DVD decoding built-in. You won't need another card, unless you're going to watch a DVD and play a game at the same time. I do that all the time though, so...wait, no I don't :)

Since you havn't built it yet, and DVD playback is something you are interested in, i would highly recomment the ATI Radeon 8500 when it comes out, or buy a Radeon 7500. both will give you great preformance and stellar DVD playback. I have used the DXR2 board form creative and it was stinky compared to my Radeon AIW. the Radeon AIW also has digital output if you are interested in such things and has done a great job shaking my room for the full Dolby Digital experince. Now if only I had a 21 inch monitor.

If it works for you then don't fix it.
