In every generation of radeon graphics card from about 48xx onward there have been a dual processor graphics card, 4870 x2, 5970, 6990, 7990. These are literally two graphics cards built onto a single board and are internally crossfired. If you add a second dual processor card of the same model and link them using the crossfire cable you now have four graphics cards between two boards all linked in quad xfire.

An alternative which is possible in some boards is to populate the x8 and x4 slots with graphics cards as well.
