Computer freezes/crashes during games

Hello,

I recently built my first computer, Mainly for some light gaming & just general use. But whenever I start a game like Spore, Mass effect or even WoW the the fans (usually) all go into over drive & the computer screen goes black & the keyboard becomes unresponsive.

My build is:

Geforce GTX 570
Maximus IV extreme-Z
i7 2600K
650w Corsair
8 gb RAM

My thought is that the PSU is too weak, But i'm still very unsure about it all.

Have you overclocked your cpu/gpu extra high?
If its a 650w corsair tx650, then its more than what you need to power up that configuration even if you overclock like crazy. I'd say there might be some faulty parts(eg. Mobo, cpu, gpu, psu)...or some driver related issues.

My PSY is a AX650w.... I'm not too sure what the difference is there.

and I don't see the need for over clocking just yet.

So damn, I was hoping for a PSU problem, Not hardware... Because i'm sure the drivers are all up to date.

Guess it would probably be safer to take her down to a shop & get her looked at.

An ax is a gold rated psu even better than the tx, there is no way its a psu problem since you haven't even overclocked, and even if you did, the ax would handle it no problem. I am afraid your gpu/ mobo is faulty most likely it could be some other hardwares fault but my bet would be on those two.

Did you connect one 6-pin and one 8-pin connector from your graphics card to your power supply unit? I know it's a silly question, but you'd be surprised about how many people forget to do that.

If you did that, you'll have to narrow it a bit more.

Download Prime95 from http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=205 and run it as blend stress test for two hours. If it doesn't crash, it means your CPU is okay.

If it does crash, it means that either your memory or your CPU is faulty. You can test memory with memtest86 (download it from www.memtest.org). Run it for at least 5 passes to be sure. If the memory is not faulty, absolutely no errors should show up. If any error shows up, test each stick individually to determine which one is the faulty one.

To test the graphics card, you can use FurMark burn-in test. You can download it from here:

I'd suggest running it for at least 1 hour to be sure.

Lastly, while running prime95 or furmark, make sure to check for overheating - you can monitor temperatures with HWMonitor. Download link: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
