Am hearing a lot of good things about the Powershot S2 IS. Only thing
stopping me from buying it at the moment is that about 30% of my shots are
taken whilst diving at recreational depths. I know the Canon S1 IS had a
dedicated housing but does anyone know if Canon plans to release one in the
UK for the S2 IS? Otherwise, does anyone have recommendations for an
alternative camera in that price bracket that'll help a relative novice
produce good underwater shots?

I actually just called Canon (US #: 1-800-OK-CANON) and asked if they
have plans for an underwater housing ... she stated that there would
not be one. They said they release the housing at the same time they
release the cameras themselves. She stated that with the addition of
the 12x optical zoom, that they would not be creating a housing. I was
a bit confused since the S1 has one - but then again - it was announced
at the same time the camera was.
I also emailed Canon to see if I would get a different answer ... I did
not, here is what they replied:
"Dear Canon Customer:
Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a
Canon
customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
The PowerShot S2 IS will not have a underwater case listed as a
accessory.
Thank you for choosing Canon.
Sincerely,
Todd
Technical Support Representative"
I would imagine any underwater housing comes available - it will be
form EWA-Marine or Ikelite.
You might take a look at the Canon Powershot A95. It's 5MP, has an
underwater shooting mode and an underwater housing available for ~$170
(US$).
