8gb ram with windows 7? Advice please.

Hi there. I'm putting a gaming rig together which I would like to use windows 7 64 bit on.
I've been reading about ram issues with windows 7 32 bit but, as stated, I have 8gb ram at the moment but in 12-16 months time I will upgrade to 16gb ram.
The advice I'm after is what edition of windows 7 will I need to get to make sure i can use the full 8gb (and eventually16gb)?
Also, any reccomendations on where to get a copy from at the lowest price possible?
Thanks in advance for the help.

  1. 32bit means the OS can only handle ~3.25 of RAM, so that's how much it can use.

64bit Home Premium can support up to 16GB, with Professional and above supporting 192Gb from memory.

Newegg has 64bit Home Premium OEM for $100. That's about as cheap as you'l find it, if you search around a bit you may be able to drop $5 or so.

  2. Thanks. That's what I thought. It's a shame that new egg don't ship to England cos their prices are awesome.
  3. In that case you want to be looking at Amazon.co.uk (We kinda just assume your from the US unless you say otherwise).

Home premium 64bit OEM. 72 pounds.
