Hey everyone,

I was looking at buying the Radeon HD 6870, but I'm a little stuck on what brand I should get.

I was looking at MSI, ASUS, GIGABYTE, and Sapphire.

Can I get some opinions on what brand to get? Pros/cons, personal experiences, etc are welcome. Just trying to get some more opinions on this.

Thanks in advance!

I have MSI. The quality makes me stick with them. I had to RMA my 6870 because of a fan problem. And they swapped it for me, probably the fan couldn't be fixed or something. Although, I had to pay to ship it to them.

But, if I were you I'd get a 7850. The 2GB VRAM is well worth it for the current generation of games as well as a lower consumption compared to the 6870. Better for long-term too.

Hmmm, I was actually considering it. It isn't too bad of a price gap anymore. Do you have it? If you do, how do you like it so far?

really when shopping for gpus on the AMD side, it really depends on how the company puts the aftermarket fan on and how silent it is, which varies from card to card.

Depends on the price:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5625/amd-radeon-hd-7870-g...

I use a standard price algorithm for price/performance, percentage difference in fps vs price.

According to the link provided, it's at *least* 5fps better (6870 = 55, 7850 = 60fps) which is 10% better.

So, at this stage, due to the less than 10% price difference (here in NZ, 6870 = 360, 7850 = 380) it becomes better value for money.

Get the 7850.

As for brand, my Sapphire 6870 = awesomeness. Quick, and very quiet, so highly reccomended. In particular, look for the Vapour-X branded ones, they're consistantly rated amongst the best factory coolers available.

A cool card will last longer, and (of course you are going to..) better for overclocking in the future, thus worth the small difference over an entry level device that has the stock (read:noisy and hot) cooler!

My actual experience with the MSI 6870 Hawk. A good graphics card. The fans are moderate in sound, but it cools the card quite nicely. It's strong, I can get modified high settings at 1920x1080 at roughly 50-60 fps.

But if I had to upgrade, I'd definitely get the 7850.

Sweet as Araren, don't forget to choose best answer for the person that help you.

Ironically, you're lucky at the moment there are no massive releases coming up, so you're unlikely to suffer from buyers remorse in any big way.

Shop around, it's your money dude, we're only helping you to spend it, not tell you what to buy. :)
