im building my first computer and am wondering if there is a big difference between the P4 3.2c and the new LGA 775 3.2 processors. Which one is the better value? the main use for the symtem is for gaming.

My other question is if I get the 3.2c how far can you overclock it with air cooling. I would get a better heatsink and fan. i was planning on using a Asus P4C800-E Deluxe. thanks for the help.

They're the same thing, and I don't expect the GOOD board for the newer version to be out for 3 more weeks.

It's a personal choice I would assume, also with considerations it's none of our money why even pass judgment at all.

Prescott’s not the fastest or the coolest but there is nothing that’s strikingly terrible about it. AMD faced the heat issues with the T-Bred, and they faced the performance smack down vs. the P4C's. Yet people still purchased AMD products, and don’t mention price performance I have seen the 1k they are asking for the FX parts.

So all in all it’s a safe bet that even when people bought AMD over Intel when Intel was performance and heat output king (less). They still ended up happy with the purchase, perhaps letting people have space on their purchase decisions would be more advised then going hey your stupid don’t buy that it’s stupid like you.

Whats wrong with you ?

The guy comes asking for advice, thats something that Joe Smoe`s dont do and end up with an overheating underperforming Prescott (where they indeed can be happy with), so tell him atleast there is something he would be much more happy with, because it performs way better in gaming, runs much cooler and you can install windows XP 64 bit in the future.

That thing is a Athlon64, read a few reviews and you will notice only diehard intel fanboys will advice you an Intel system, but in reality your money would be much better spend on a Athlon64 system.

Toms Hardware Site is a joke !
Looks like intel spent more on bribing reviewers to cover up it aint that great than they did in R&D, you know what im talking about Tom !

For all of those saying Intel bad for gaming, did you ever had a Pentium 4 Prescott?

Get the LGA 775 processors, their better than Athlon 64.

Except that there's a whole lot more to a system than just the processor, and even with the latest offerings from Nvidia, I'll still take an Intel chipset over anything available for the AMDs.

I don't think of the 3.2C as a good O'C candidate. The multiplier is 16 and the chip will really heat-up compared to the chips with lower multiples. Since you asked though,
P4-3.2C on air - 3.73ghz
P4-3.0C on air - 3.75ghz (lower multiple, less heat, higher O'C)
I wouldn't recommend taking either of those chips up there without extreme cooling, water is preferable. Right now the 3.0C CPU is in the "best buy" category.
PS - the 3.2 was done at a 5:4 Ratio and the 3.0 at 1:1

another unsupported suggestion and blanket statement lacking credibility....

right now the lga 775 platform is not worht the investment. it has many of the latest generation features, but most of those features dont evne gain you anything yet. if your buying now, go with a socket 939 ahtlon 64 or if you prefer intel, a northwood based system.

Do you think 3.0C is a better buy than 2.8C now? Retail $215 vs. $178

No one is saying that Intel is bad for gaming (except the northwood celerons). What I am saying is why pay top dollar for a second, or third place chip.
Truth is, the A64s are best for gamers. The P4c is clearly second fiddle. That leaves the prescotts at a distant third. Putting them on a questionable socket, gives a very tidy fourth place position. If you recomend the pew Intel setup, you deserve the sticker that says Intel inside idiot outside.

I can get an OEM 3.0C for $190.00 tomorrow. I don't like the retail heatsinks anyway because they are not copper-core or copper bottomed like the 3.2C. And yea, the 2.8C will do in a pinch! Pricing has not gone at all on them though. Most people would be happy with just a stock 3.0C. One heck of a good CPU!

jonny1714 this is not the place for asking advice for buying a CPU, 75% here is intel lover, it`s all the fault of THG, they get alot of money so Intel will come good out of reviews, and those guys believe this crap while all the other sites say that athlon64 is the fastest.

lol, can you make yourself sound any stupider?

Clearly have problems reading, as the vast majority of people here suggest AMDs for gaming rigs, not Intel. Besides the fact that Toms clearly has AMD beating Intel out on lotsof benchmarks every time they review them. You sound like a whiney little kid.

Not everyone here sits around and plays games all day, Coop! The actual bias here is more toward AMD than Intel anyway. It's fine with me because I like both of them.

Yup agree with that...
Buy a CPU that fits your need. Not one from a compagny that you like or one to brag.

If primarly gaming its pretty obvious you should go for AMD, if you do other stuff it might get harder to pick between amd and intel.

Also you dont need a FX53 to browse internet and do some excel... Anyway you can pretty much scrap comments from PeteRoy and take Coop advice with a grain of salt...

if i get an AMD 64 i'd get the 3200+. So which core do i want Newcastle of Clawhammer? and i need advice on a motherboard. I was looking at the MSI K8N Neo Platinum or the GIGABYTE GA-K8NS PRO which is better?. Or do i want to do with the Via chipset? and one more thing, those need registered memory right?

ok no you will not need registered memeory for the 3200+, just regular ddr ram is fine.

as for which core, dont worry so much about that, they just about equal each other and you wont notice any differnce when there is a strenght for one over the other.

as for motherboard, the msi k8n neo platinum is by far the better amd board, the nforce chipset it has is packed with nice features.

Well, yes and NO! The hard firewall in the 250 chip on that board is causing fits! Peeps can't log onto game-servers running Punkbuster software. NVidia has no answer yet and MSI Forum is becoming bashville! There is a sticky devoted just to this issue. At this point I cannot recommend this board. :frown:
