DVD 40 or 80 wire cable?

I'm putting together my brother's new computer. I have a Pioneer DVD, 16/10/40 CD-R/W, and a ATA-100 hard drive. I got two 80 cables and one 40 wire cable. The instructions don't say any thing about which cables to use. I would think it would be ok to put the extra 80 cable on the DVD drive since it can transfer at 22,600Kb/sec. Must be ATA-33. So do any of you know if this will harm the dvd drive?

Sincerely,

the 80 wire ata cable is completely backwards compatible.

just rember your highly unikely to see any difference in speed with the DVD, and the 80 wire cables are generally more fragile and problem prone than the 40pin ones.

That's so true about the fragility of 80wire cables... I keep breaking those damn things.

A Pioneer DVD-116 is ATA/66 ... so if you want the drive to run at full speed, use a 40 pin, 80 conductor cable. DMA Transfer Mode 4.

It won't hurt the drive if you use a slower cable. But it won't be as fast.

Yep ... those ATA/66-100 cables are fragile! I found out the hard way that they don't like to be folded, or rolled. That'll generate lots of atapi errors in Win2k.

Live and learn.

Actually... are you sure that that drive is ATA66? To the best of my knowledge, there are no disc drives that are ATA66 right now.

P.S. He has to be using the DVD-116 or the 106S because no other DVD that Pioneer makes has that high a transfer rate. The next closest, in terms of speed, is the A05SW, which has a high data transfer rate of 14,900KB. This model is ATA/33.
