Dell XPS Studio 8100 upgrade

Hi guys,

I read a similar thread but the guy didn't have the same processor or as much memory. I was wondering is someone could tell me what is the "best" compatible graphics card I could run with my current setup. Thanks!

More about dell studio 8100 upgrade
  1. Anything you want, pretty much, although, with a 350W PSU, you'll almost definitely need a PSU upgrade as well. Very few decent cards will reliably work with that PSU.

The other thread I read said that the Dell PSU's we underrated that they were really closer to 400 - 450W. Any thruth to that?

  3. Dell does seem to use good psus. Don't go crazy, but try a decent card and only upgrade the psu if you have problems.

Whether that's true or not, I personally wouldn't push it. A mid range GPU might run with that PSU, but "reliably"? That's another issue altogether. A GOOD 500-550W unit can run almost any single card setup though, even though I ALWAYS err on the side of caution and recommend a bit more than needed.

A GTX 550 Ti or Radeon 6770 is the furthest I'd push it with that PSU. I don't even feel safe recommending those, but just saying that those are the highest I would go with that PSU.

If you want to go better than that, I can only safely recommend a PSU upgrade to go with it.
  5. It really depends on how much you want to spend. If your budget is below $150, then I'd suggest getting HD 7750. However, if it's $250+, get a new power supply along with a powerful card.
  6. i have a 6770 in a dell with a 350w power supply, works great.
  7. Thanks for all the replies. Is there a decent power supply you recommend that doesn't break the bank?
