I have an old Nokia handsfree kits that was designed to work with an 8250 -
8260 - 8265 etc. It has a charging connector and a headset connector on a
Y-cable that comes from a cigarette lighter plugin speaker - amplifier -
microphone. I want to use this on a newer phone with the standard 3-wire
headset connector, and while the car kit headset connector is the right
size, it has 4 contacts. Can anyone tell me the wiring of this 4-wire plug
so I can cut it off and splice in a standard 3-wire plug?

But before you cut anything, consider getting an adapter.
