I want to use 1 video card at the full x16 bandwidth and add another card in the x4 slot for physics on a motherboard that has 1 x16 @ 1 x4. What value do I gain?

I t would be nvidia, something like a 2gb card for x16 slot and something small just for physics for the x4 slot. Will it work with no limitations?

It look's like the only way SLI and X-fire works if you spend a ton of money. I thought that maybe I could cut cost by just getting one big card for rendering and a smaller card for physic's to take the load off wihtout losing any bandwidth from the x16 slot.
