I've been reading tom's hardware for years and I'm going to put together my first desktop. Any advice the community could give me would be greatly appreciated. I'm having the most trouble on deciding on a motherboard and case, everything else seems to be solid. I'm starting with a single gtx 670 but i plan on sli in about 6-12 months. Yes, I do plan on overclocking. I already have a storage drive.

This is what I have so far:

Are there any changes you would make? Is the case sufficient on space/cooling for gtx 670 sli? Is the motherboard alright, or is there a different brand that would be preferable? I know a lot of people put stock in the asrock boards.

Rockdpm - I initially had a crucial in there but I saw http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/buy-ssd-recommendat... so I switched it out for the plextor.

Bigcyco1 - Is there a specific reason you dont like the case? Aesthetics, company, quality, etc? Do you have a recommendation? Also, love the pic.

Aesthetics is only reason why i don't like it that's why i said to each his or her own there is nothing actually wrong with it that i am aware of.P.S. Thanks! ;)

I like that case, its like a ninja and stuff!

A couple. I'd probably buy the 2500K over the 3570K, I'm not convinced the 3570K is worth a penny more than the 2500K, but people have their preferences.

Yes.

I would vote Asrock, only because I had a Gigabyte board die on me once and their tech support's attitude towards me encouraged me to shop elsewhere. (Asus) but Asrock has some pretty good boards at pretty nice prices. Particularly this one:

nekulturny - Which asrock? extreme4 or 6?

rockdpm - I didn't mean anything by it, I just showed the reason for the switch. Thank you for your response, I appreciate it.

Another reason not to buy extreme 4 read last page http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/asrock_z77_extreme... and i will quote The only negative I have for this motherboard is that it slips outside of typical ATX specifications. It’s 3cm thinner than a standard ATX motherboard and as a result may lack secure mounting on the far side since this isn’t a common size, which also means you should be very careful when plugging in the 24-pin ATX motherboard power – as the motherboard may flex.

Either of them. The difference between them really aren't that substantial though. I think it has a couple extra small PCI slots, but hardly anyone really uses those. Maybe a wireless NIC card, but what else does the average Joe really need with more PCI-E?

Although looking at the pictures here, if you do plan on running wireless, that board configuration looks compromised to me, (its too close to the main video card slot) so I guess I'd say go with the Extreme 6 if you plan to run wireless at some point

Why did Tom's give the Extreme 4 their recommended buy award? Was it approved by the same jackass who thinks the FX-4100 is worthy of an honorable mention? I guess that would explain a lot.  I think honestly from glancing at the conclusion page, its still worth considering. You shouldn't be manhandling the mobo anyway.

lol, its not all of Tom's, if you look at the top of the articles its different people. Don Woligroski aka Cleeve, I don't put much stock in anything he says. Chris Angeli is one fellow who comes to mind that has articles that are worth reading, I don't know what his forum name is though.

Lol wow I came back to a full blown discussion on...well Im not actually sure what. Thank you both for your input, I'll flip a coin between asrock and asus. Does anyone have a recommendation on cases though? It needs to be big enough for sli gtx 670s, no water cooling, and at most 150 bucks. I like the bitfenix case well enough but im concerned because I dont know as much about the company compared to corsair, antec, and cooler master.

Sorry, that happens a lot around here lol.

If you ask me in that budget range, my vote is going to be the NZXT Phantom. I have one thats black with green trim. Its frickin huge, cool looking and very high quality.

The "Phantom 410s" are slightly smaller.
