Is 4GB RAM enough to optimize a Pentium D 945?

Last response: in CPUs

Hi!

These are my PC's specs,

• Pentium D 945 (3.4GHz) CPU
• Gigabyte G41M - Combo motherboard (2x DDR3 capable DIMM's)
• _________RAM
• 1GB XFX GeForce 9500GT (DDR3) VGA
• 550W PowerLogic Magnum Pro PSU

Imagine that currently I have no RAM. So, I have 2 options,

01) 2x 2GB G.Skill DDR3-1333MHz (F3-10600CL9S-2GBNT)
02) 2x 4GB G.Skill DDR3-1333MHz (F3-10600CL9S-4GBNT)

Since I'm with an old Pentium D, I know that I cant play the latest games like NFS RUN, BF3 etc.

So, to play some new (but not latest) games with maximum FPS possible with this CPU,
is it enough to use 4GB (option 01) RAM? or... is it worth enough/useful to get extra +4GB (option 02)?

NOTE - I often use this PC for Gaming, but not those high end software like Illustrator etc.

Best solution

4gb ram is more then enough. To be honest wasting money on a pentium d system with your priority being gaming is pointless. My basic 5930g with the slowest c2d p7350 2ghz cpu and a 9600m gt gddr3 graphics card has more chance of playing games better then you.

I have 3gb ram and windowx xp currently installed and play games fine. 4gb is more then enough for any game especially with a low end 9500gt you won't need much ram as your graphics card won't play at higher resolution. Yes I am talking about system ram.

Also your motherboard supports I believe a 45nm core 2 duo cpu. Get that and you will going from a tractor your (pentium d) to a sports car (A 45nm core 2 duo).

You just insulted my sentimental processor which I got a as a gift! ;)
Ha ha! Just kidding!

And thanks! I'll be sticking with the 4GB (2x 2GB) then! Thanks for the quick reply boss!

& for the record dude - I'll be building a fair RIG next month! ;)

Thanks anyways!
