What do i need to know about resolution?

I'm real close to buying a computer. For my budget i'll have the computer for a week or two running on an old crt or on a tv before i get an actual monitor. So before i invest money into a monitor what do i need to know about resolution? I'm working with a phenom 965 BE, radeon hd 6850, and a asus m5a78l-m lx plus. Recommendations are welcome, looking in the lower 100 range (100-150ish)

Oh and if you catch this, one more semi-on-topic question. You know if HDMI splitters are any good? Will i still get good quality if i connect one to the monitor with a computer, ps3, and fios box on the other end?

Yea, they're no problem if you want to use multiple devices.
