Dell xps 17 laptop core i5 update it to a 3rd gen processor

Hello,
I bought brand new from Dell a XPS 17 notebook it has the core i5 processor can i update the processor to a 3rd generation i5 processor. What is involved and what processor number wuld I need?

highly doubtful, and you wouldn't gain much (assuming its a 2nd gen currently) anyway.

I assume you have a 2nd gen Sandy Bridge CPU in that laptop. If so then a 3rd gen Ivy Bridge CPU would physically fit, but it will not function at all.

All desktop and laptop motherboards have a BIOS which has a database of usable CPUs. If the CPU is not in the database, then the desktop/laptop will not boot up.

Your laptop is too old to have a BIOS that can identify Ivy Bridge CPUs. In short, you need to buy a new laptop if you want to have an Ivy Bridge CPU.

Well, the Intel HD 4000 is on average 35% more powerful than the older Intel HD 3000 so at least you can get a performance boost in games. Granted, it is slower than a discrete graphics card / chip; with the exception of the GT 610m which is simply pathetic...
