Hi all,

My brother needs a computer to do the following: everyday email, web surfing, watching dvds, youtube videos, netflix, etc. and regular office work using MS Word, Excel, etc.

Is it possible to build a new and fast computer for what he needs under $300? I do have Win XP Pro and MS Office 2003 Pro.
Also, it is worth the effort or should I pay $379 and buy him a Dell Inspiron?

Forgot to add: if it is worth building it and can be done for about $300, what parts should I get? Case, CPU, Mobo, Power, HDD? anything else?

Well, the monitor, and HDD themselves will cost $200 alone. It's impossible unless you buy used parts. However, for $379, you could build a computer just as good as an Inspiron.

Windows XP is EXTREMELY old... You should upgrade to Windows 8 for a small price later in the year if you build this.

Intel Pentium G630 Sandy Bridge 2.7GHz - 68
ZALMAN Z9 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $45
ASUS P8H61-M LX PLUS LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX motherboard - $48 (HUGE SALE)
CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory - 25
SeaSonic SS-300ET Bronze 300W ATX12V V2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply - 40 (Good sale)
Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKX 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - 70
dvd drive - 18

= $313.

Compare that to the Dell computer and decide. You should also note that the power supply does not have a PCI Express connector so you can't add a graphics card later on.
