ATA66/100 cable on non-ATA IDE drive?

I'm looking to replace an IDE cable that is on a small hard drive and my CDROM drive with a spliced one for better air flow. I only see these cables for ATA66/100 drives (on www.overclock.co.uk who are excellent mail order guys - geeks selling to geeks, not marketing droids selling to geeks) - my CDROM drive is Creative52x and my hard drive is, um, don't know much about it, but it's old, so not ATA66/100 - it's 400Mb and made when that was cutting edge, might be Seagate.

Anyway, will these still work OK without losing performance?

Cheers,
Xain

For those drives I would try to use just a regular IDE cable.. not the 80 wire ATA66/100 cables.

They will work fine - they're backwards compatible.

I'm with Arrow on this one. I use them on my Cd Rom and CDRW and never have had any issues ...

"supposed to" does not always apply. I've seen it with Atapi devices too many times not to say something. So if you do use the 80 wire and run into problems, you'll probably have to go get a standard cable just to be sure.. you can prevent that by just getting a standard cable... or really cables are cheap.. buy one of each.. !!!!

I agree with Chord. Use the 40 wire cable. You should also be aware that the 80 wire cables are rather delicate and easily damaged. If you are not haveing an overheating problem I would not get spliced cables...you can arrange the ribbon cables to optimize airflow.

I can only get pre-spliced ATA66/100 cables - I can't get ATA33 ones from the same people and I'd rather buy from them.

I do have IDE cables that fit already, if necessary I can switch back to one of those.

Thanks for all the replies!

Go for it and have fun - both ways are good.
