Laptop wont turn on, how do I figure out what is wrong?

The laptop is an Asus k55n. A can of soda (unopened) dropped on the 'panel', next to the touchpad. It will no longer turn on.

I checked what component was in the area of impact. It was the hard drive, yet after I replaced the hard drive it still doesn't turn on. So is it likely the motherboard or something that is messed up? Is there any good way to find out?
