just been doing a little overclocking and i try to increase my volts and the sliders let me but in H/W or on msi when i use its test it says 1.7 as well and on gpuz ranges from 1.7 or lower. any reason for this?

Just to be clear, the stock core voltage on the 7970 is 1170mv, or 1.17 volts, not 1.7 volts. If you want to change the core voltage you will have to unlock it in MSI afterburner's settings as its locked for safety reasons.

sorry that's what i meant, its been a long night and msi lets me move the slider its just that it don't show a change in the voltage when i use H/W or the test that comes with the afterburner.

Make sure that you have "Enable low-level hardware access interface (user mode)", "unlock voltage control" and "unlock voltage monitoring" all checked in the Afterburner settings. Also make sure that you are running Afterburner version 2.2.1
