What Is The Best Method Of Applying Thermal Paste

I think my AS5 is starting to leak because my heatsink won't stay in place and I'm wondering if it's worth spreading, the line thing or the dot thing.

The way it should be done is to apply a blob of thermal paste on the heat spredder plate of the Cpu in the center, then find a bit of plastic, Fyi health lottery plastic cards are great.
Then spread it in a thin layer all the way over the heat spredder,or die of the cpu.
