Direct draw error-win 8

Hey guys, I have recently upgraded from vista and I have been having some problems. Whenever I try to open most games, It comes up with an error. It always says something like "could not initialize graphics system . Make sure you're video card and drivers are compatible with direct draw." It also sometime says something like "set desktop area to 640x480.....color palette to 256 colours...."

If anyone has any ideas how to fix it that would be great.

Is it using a native W8 video driver or an older one in compatibility mode?
