Ah ok... I thought somehow this info got lost, since the pic usually is
much smaller than the original when I save it from fotopic.net to disk
(even though the pic takes up the size of the original pic at
fotopic.net). It goes from approximately 2.5 MB to 0.5 MB in size
(while the resolution remains the same) but apparently the exif data is
preserved.

What it didn't have his social security number? :-) Good info to know,
thanks.

Whether or not you will find EXIF info included with the pictures you
download from the web depends on how the image files are handled by the
software/programmer that put the webpages together in the first place.

The software I happen to be using for quickly putting together a
photogallery for the web, Media Pro's iView, automatically strips the
EXIF info from the picture files before putting them up on the web. As a
result, the files are smaller and less memory is utilized on the server
hosting the website. Another example is Adobe's ImageReady which gives
the user the option of including or not including (this is the default)
the EXIF info with the pictures that are being edited for a webpage.

When I only have a few images that I would like others to be able to
make prints of, I post them as "printable" files on my website using a
set of templates that I cobbled together by hand for just this purpose
ages ago. As is usually the case, the files are compressed JPGs but I
make no attempt to remove the EXIF info - I can't be bothered.

In the first examples, a visitor to the website will find no EXIF
information included with the images downloaded to their computer. In
the last example, they will.
