Xfire

can you use Xfire if your 2 pcie slots are not side by side, currently my pcie slots are split by a regular pci slot.

i can't atm unfortunately but i just found something. I was going to replace my hd6950 as it suddenly died with 2 cheaper cards and go xfire but i took out the 6950 from the top pcie slot and moved it down to the next one and its working, does this mean my mobo is on the way out or could it just be a bad slot or could there be some other reason?
