Is it so wrong to buy gold?

I know this is a horse that has been beatin to death but:
Is it so terribly wrong to buy gold online?
I understand that the economy is horrible right now, but as I was playing on
a pvp server and moved to a pve server, I knew no one, had no lvling
partners and was ready to get back into the swing of pvp. I had no money to
start with to buy equipment as I was going to play an ice mage and aoe
myself up to level. Now, spending 9 dollars I bought myself 150 gold on
ebay. Now, this does give me quite a bit of an advantage over other
starting players, but it really helped me a lot. I managed to get from 1 to
49 in the matter of 3 days played just aoeing around.
I know people say, "Don't feed the farmers!" but is it really that bad to
feed them? I mean, farming seems to be a lot better job than slaving their
way for pennies a day.
I really don't feel bad about doing it, but maybe that is my way of
justifying cheating..

Any thoughts that don't involve: "U r ghey, hax! luzur!"

I see nothing wrong with it as long as you don't buy anymore than 100-150g
in a pinch.. maybe to buy a mount or something. Don't make a habbit of it..
not sure what the CoC says about it. On a personal level, I would see it as
taking away some of the fun away.. since earning money is a key in building
your char.

I agree it does take some fun out of it, i needed 30g for my mount, did a
few instances, ZF and such, got my gold and 3 levels in the process and a
few blue items too. You will miss some of the good points if you dont have
to grind for your gold, but i think its the choice of the player.

Yeah, I can see your point, but my problem is, I have gone through these
before. They were fun the first couple of characters worth, but now I just
want to lvl up, go to bg and kick some butt. I wanted to basically get
right down to it w/o having to hassle through instances. I am the type of
person that usually likes to solo a lot and I can get more xp with blizzard
farming than I can from grouping in instances or doing quests. Im not
saying that every newb on the block needs 150 gold so they can look really
twinked out at lvl 12, but it really did help me a lot.

Buying gold is not a problem - farming gold for a living is.

There are countless stories about gold farmers who, using more or less
dirty methods, try to claim a monopoly on the best farmgrounds, thus
cutting them off from normal players who want to quest in that area.

It is also a known fact that professionel gold farmers are not above
using exploits to get the gold they sell, and they actively search for
new exploits. Exploits, such as duping, is the fastest way of
destroying a game economy.

Feeding the professionel gold farmers is feeding an industry that is
bent on destroying the games we love for a fast profit. This is why
you are likely to get replies like: "U r ghey, hax! luzur!".

You can give a few gold from your high level chars to your low level
chars. I think even on level 10 you will find it hard to spend more than
20 silver. Unless you go to the AH, but for me that takes a lot of the
fun out of the game. I like to wear what I find and only buy what I
really really need. (like a bag if you are unlucky in finding them)

Only if they are on the same server...which for the original poster they were
not.

There comes a point where you've seen enough of the content to know what
parts of it you like, and what parts you don't. But I still think it's a
bad thing for the game. If you've ground our three other characters, I can
see wanting to skip the grind and enjoy the fun parts.

I just checked some prices on UK ebay and that seems very cheap for that
amount of gold.
1-49 in 3 days??? You should advertise yourself as a powerleveler and get
back the money you spent on the gold!

After having one main, alot of people create alts then give them more money
than need, I usually do a few deadmines runs to get them some good equipment
too.

I should take a course in reading and understanding :)

At least on a PvE server you won't get ganked as often so you will spend
less time in limbo and thus more time earning money ;-)

the main problems r:
1st: its not allowed (from Blizzard) so u better not post ur chars
name...
2nd: the most that sell gold didnt get it rule conform. They use bots
or Dupe things. So with buying gold with RL money they dont give up
destroying the game.

if u r sure u bought it from someone that really grind the money
himself i think its ok.

U r ghey, hax! luzur!
.... but seriously, as someone has touched on, the problem isn't the one
person that does it. It's the fact that if it becomes accepted it would
further destroy the economy, it would spur the farmers on, and you would
have more and more farmers in games to earn RL money. When quick dollars are
available (from gold buyers), the incentive for farmers to find cheats and
bots is multiplied. This is a sure fire way to destroy the game, ask anyone
who has played Diablo 2 on an "open" realm. Even closed realm D2 was rampant
with dupes and "white" items at one stage.

cheers,
Stu.

the game is made for taking steps one by one. You say you are
lvl49, at which lvl are your professions?

Because earning money is made with professions and saving money
is made with the AH.

My warrior is now LVL54 and his professions are between 280-300
except fishing, which is 50. LVL300 blacksmithing did cost me lots
of money/time, but I get rewards for it. And all money that I put
into it, I earned with blacksmithing.

Your advantage is, you saved time, but missed the progress of
stepping up your professions and I think every main character
should make 5 professions.
