I was surprised to see that the Canon Pixma 8500 (as well as other Pixma
models) are being discontinued. Does anyone know the reason for this? I
take it they weren't hot sellers or something? I just bought mine about 6-7
months ago.

I hope they keep manufacturing the inks for it for a long while yet.

A new series coming out?
I doubt they weren't hotsellers...rather opposite...i bet 4000 was among the
most sold models...
Chipped ink is coming out...maybe this is the reason for new series.
But, i bet old ink will be out quite a while. Third party carts even longer.

Welcome to the Canon marketing cycle of new and improved repackaging of old
technology.
Canon is by no means the only manufacturer to use this suberfuge but they
are among the most egregious.
Since Pixma printers use the same ink as the prior generation of i9x
printers how could they be considered a "new" product in the first place?

They were different in their paper handling. (Duplex printing) They were
also faster.
