5870 or 7970?

Hello, I currently have a 870 (1GB I think) and I am thinking of upgrading to the 7970. While it has a lot more memory I have read that the 5870 still performs well up against it?
The thing is I have a rare opportunity to upgrade easily, as my friend wants a video card and I was thinking of selling it to him with my PSU for 300$ then buying a 7970 and better PSU (need modular) for probably over 600$. So basically getting two upgrades for 300$, you guys think it's worth it? Or have a different card to suggest?
Thank you for any help!

If it's only going to end up costing you $300 then the upgrade is worth it. The 7970 obviously is a lot better and will have good longevity with plenty of vram for going with higher resolutions. If your friend will take the 5870 and your PSU, then I'd say it's well worth it.
