Is 6870 overkill with a 1680x1050 native monitor?

Here is my question : Would my Radeon HD 6870 GPU be some kind of an over-kill for my Samsung SyncMaster 22'' 2233BW LCD 1680 x 1050 native monitor? (I don't have the budget to go for a 1920 x 1080 monitor)

I know the HD 6870 can go up to a resolution of :
2560x1600 - Dual-link DVI with HDCP
2048x1536 - VGA
1920x1200 - HDMI
My monitor is a Samsung 22'' with a native resolution of 1680 x 1050, so it can't go higher than that.

People claim gaming in 1680 x 1050 is ''not that much'' of a difference with the 1920 x 1080 resolution. But since the HD 6870 can play games in a resolution of far more than 1680 x 1050, can it still run wery well on such a resolution even if it's a demanding GPU?

Here's my rig :
Processor : Intel Core i3-2120 (3.3 Ghz)
GPU : Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 1GB DDR5
8GB HyperX Kingston DDR3 RAM 1333 Mhz
Gigabyte GA-H77-DS3H

Thank you for your time!

it should be a lot better than decent though it depends on how you would consider as decent. for me having more than 30fps at all times considered as decent. with his setup he should get more than 60fps in majority of games except a few that was intended to make gpu cry even just to get 30fps (metro 2033, the witcher 2)
