I keep getting random black screens with buzzing sound

I recently built a new PC for myself.. here are some specs

i5 3570k
radeon 7870
550w xfx PSU
g-skill ddr3 ram 8gb
asrock z77 extreme4 motherboard
western digital 500gb hdd

Right, my problem is every now and again (once or twice a day) when playing games i will get a black screen crash and sound from my headphones will be buzzing. This will require a manual restart.

I looked into this and i ended up RMA'ing my GPU.. the new gpu came and the problem still persists.. is there any diagnostics i can do or ways i can check to why this happened. Thanks a lot!

Try and narrow the problem down.

Does it only happen with a particular game, or with multiple different games?
Does it ever happen outside of games?

Try running with only 1 stick of RAM for a while (4GB). Then swap it for the other 4GB stick.

Check the temperatures on the CPU and GPU. Badly connected heat sinks are a common problem on home built systems.

I assume you aren't overclocking anything?

I only play league of legends and battlefield 3 and it happens on both. The CPU heatsink is connected fine.. nothing is overclocked

Then I suggest you do the things he recommended.

And does it ever happen out of games or not?
