Both Pioneers are the same except for two things: the way they are accessed--via slot or tray; and the slot has digital out while the tray does not.

I have a Toshiba 8xDVD. It is kind slow but it is able to read scatched CD without any problem.

unless you are getting one of those drive for testing, the ltd-163 is both cheaper and faster and better. cdrinfo.com confirms this. so does cdrlabs.com

i had a slot loading pioneer 32x
i was very sad when that product line went away

now ive got the 106S with slot.
im back in love again

I finnally got a chance to compare the both Pioneer DVD drives side-by-side....guess what I have found out?? The slot version (106s) is MUCH quiter than the tray!!! So is noise is of concern, definitly go for the slot version....otherwise, both are exactly the same.

thats interesting to know.
i always just assumed that the slot was a bit louder.

not that it really matters to me.

i wouldnt mind a little extra noise for the convience of slot.
but as its quieter... double bonus!
