hey saving up to buy myself a new PC for christmas. have come up with this list of parts from australian online store PCcasegear. want to know what everyone thinks. i chose these parts for their longevity, OC'ing and to crank my games up to max.
it would be greatly appreciated if people could have a look and tell me if ive missed anything or i need to change parts (PSU, mobo etc) cheers. im also bringing over parts from my old build if that helps (fan controller, HDD's, DVD drive). may also change extension cables to black in case i need more as my local retailer only has black

No problems with the build. The only thing I'd really tweak is that you don't need 16GB of RAM for gaming.
August 13, 2012 11:39:30 AM

cheers for the reply. the only reason i choose 16gb is because most of the gaming rigs ive seen have got 16gb. ive also heard that ivy bridge CPU's are better these days compared to sandy bridge's such as my 2500K. is that true?

Have you got an ARC near you? You can pick up a haf x case from them for 198 i think, it boosts your pccg shipping quite a bit that's all.

What is your price range?

I highly recommend i5 3570k and asrock z77 extreme4 mobo.
Evo 212 cpu cooler are awesome and for graphics card...i would wait til 660ti comes out.
They are meant to be a bargain and only 10% less gpu power than a 670 for alot cheaper.
If you give me a price range and tell me what parts you already have i'll list some parts for you. :)
For PSU grab a Corsair one off amazon (international shipping selected) and 850w modular only cost me 140 delivered to sydney.
As for the rest looks pretty sweet. :)

Psu is abit too much. I'd get the pro 4 instead of pro 3. Mushkin enhanced deluxe is a faster ssd. Otherwise it's nice.

cheers again for all the replys. My budget is about $1500-$1600 depending how much i can save between now and christmas. working my ass off to save cause i want a killer PC (in my eyes anyway)
August 13, 2012 5:21:45 PM

The hd7870 is a better newer card, swap the 580...but let's see what the upcoming gtx 660ti brings.
August 14, 2012 1:43:01 AM

i5 3570k - $230
8gb corsair vengeance - $65
gtx 670 gigabyte overclocked - $450
asrock z77 extreme4 - $150
cooler master haf x case - $200
850w PSU Modular corsair - $125
hyper evo 212 cpu cooler - $35
128gb samsung 830 SSD - $119

Total = 1374

Did you want to get a better graphics card or maybe sli 2 of the gtx 670? :3

That is well in your price range and a good gaming rig.
August 14, 2012 1:46:08 AM

ok. i would rather get a nvidia card as my current build has a AMD card and CPU so i want to try an intel CPU and nvidia card. my girlfriends dad has a 560 in his system and im always jealous everytime i watch him play the game as it runs as smooth as silk compared to my system. thats why i chose the 580. better than the 560 and i would rather spend more money on a graphics card so it will last me longer
August 14, 2012 2:58:01 AM

You know a 670 is far better right? :p
But yeah if you are waiting till christmas just get a gtx 660ti or gtx660 when they come out. ;)
Rest of build i recommended do you like?
August 14, 2012 4:11:05 AM

yeah good parts man. cant thank you enough for taking the time to choose parts for me. as long as i can get them from pccasegear ill be happy. i want to have enough cash left over for some cathodes and some extension cable to tidy up the cable management.
August 14, 2012 4:39:21 AM

as long as that cards going to play my games at max settings or close enough with good FPS ill be happy. and i want it to last a while as this PC i want it to last me a while until i have to upgrade.
August 14, 2012 4:41:09 AM

Nice build. Good luck with saving.
August 14, 2012 4:43:12 AM

Yeah mate definitely.
I recommend getting your video card off ebay and your power supply off amazon though.
I saved 70 dollars getting my msi lightning gtx 680 off ebay rather than pccg. And amazon had the psy 40 cheaper than pccg.
You will have no issues with maxxing most games graphics with a gtx 670 or 680. :)  You could always get a 690 for 1000. It has 2 gpu's in it ;)
August 14, 2012 4:44:20 AM

The GTX 670 is better than the GTX 580 and uses FAR LESS power.
August 14, 2012 4:46:01 AM

LOL dont want a graphics card that powerful.:)  670 or 680 will be fine for me
August 14, 2012 4:55:46 AM

560<560ti<560ti 448<570<580<670<690
Wasn't impressed by the 680.
August 14, 2012 5:35:24 AM

Why arn't you impressed by 680?
Not even voltage unlocked msi lightning?
August 14, 2012 5:50:14 AM

so i think ive got the gist of this. you guys are saying that the 670 or 680 is better than the 580. so ill be getting one of those now but i dont want the top of the line card. my main interests in it are how long it will last for in terms of games settings, its overclockability as i will push the max i can out of the card as well as the CPU so which one would be better for those points? i want to buy them online preferabley from PCCaseGear as i love getting packages in the mail :)
August 14, 2012 5:53:28 AM

It would still be the GTX 670.
August 14, 2012 5:55:32 AM

ok which is the best 670 for overclocking? and is the ivy bridge 3570K as easy to overclock as the 2500K?
August 14, 2012 5:58:04 AM

Yep, just don't OC too high that you have to mess with the voltages. It can OC to 4.2 GHz at stock voltage.
August 14, 2012 6:07:41 AM

If you want gtx670 i would go with zotac for best out of the box overclocked speeds or a gigabyte gtx670.
Cpu definitely i5 3570k as all you need to do in basic is change the multiplier in bios settings.
Get the graphics card off ebay or amazon though due to how much cheaper they are on there compared to pccg.

The 670 is only 10% slower for $100+ cheaper . At such high performance 10% is nothing. I'd put the $100 in a bigger ssd.
August 14, 2012 6:21:28 AM

ok what difference is the 690 and the 680 in terms of %?
August 14, 2012 6:24:37 AM

The GTX 690 is not worth it at your resolution. You will need a 2560x1440 monitor for it to be worthwhile. The GTX 670 already maxes most games at 1080p.

The 690 is basically 2 stock 680s in sli. It's the most powerful single card.
August 14, 2012 9:49:14 AM

ive been rummaging around on the forums recently and some people have been saying that the i5 3570K runs hotter and cant overclock as far as the i5 2500K. is this true?
August 14, 2012 11:27:47 AM

Are you going for benchmarks? Because unless you are...you won't need to overclock your cpu past 4.5ghz.
Your graphics card will bottleneck before your cpu.
Correct me if i'm wrong.
August 14, 2012 11:49:00 AM

no ill only be bench marking to compare it to my old PC and see how much of a performance increase there is. as for the overclock i want to push it as far as it can go with my cooler to get the max performance in my games. thats also why i want a good overclocking card, to get max performance
August 14, 2012 11:59:26 AM

You won't notice the performance of maxxing your cpu overclock.
It is really only valid to get higher benchmarking scores, it won't use more of the cpu in game.
As for overclocking your graphics card the msi lightning gtx 680 has the best overclocks.
I've seen people with 1384/7300 on air stable.
Read as many reviews as you want. :)
August 14, 2012 12:55:51 PM

Galaxy gtx670 also overclocks well. You don't need heavy overclocking to game.
August 14, 2012 6:36:25 PM

For IVB, 4.2 GHz is all you need, and that can easily be done without raising the voltages.
August 15, 2012 1:46:43 AM

4.5 can easily be done without raising the voltages.

Gtx690 are terrible at overclocking, sli msi lightning gtx680 are the best performance and best overclock card out at the moment. Them in sli overclocked crap all over gtx690.

For budget just grab yourself a gtx670 though. Your gaming machine will still be awesome. ;)
I'm fairly sure that you have enough information regarding your rig in the past several highly informable posts so you should choose your best answer. ;)

remember you'll need more power to run your 680's in sli overclocked, and your opponent hasn't sli'd yet either... but yes,the gtx690 is extravagant, but there's no denying it's awesome. MSI have good cooling, but what reason is there not to get the twin frozr 3 gtx 670 other than slightly better synthetic benchmarks? He could put the savings to use, like you said, he'll still game awesome.
