Is socket 939 definatley coming out and if it is will it support Athlon 64. If it is coming out is it worth waiting for or would I be better off getting the Athlon 64 3400+ now? I am building a new computer an it will be used for gaming.
939 certainly will be coming out;but the current 64s are on different sockets-so cann't be used with socket 939.No one can tell you whether to built or not.If rich built now and again for the socket 939;if poor either wait for socket 939 or buy an amd 64 3200+ now (rather than the more expensive 3400+.Don't expect any of the amd athlon 64s to be much more than webstations under windows64;buy them only for 32 bit performance.
Socket 754 will continue for another 2 years according to amd's roadmap. Get an a64-3000 now cause they are cheap and very fast, then an upgrade to a 3700 will be worthwhile.
Dual Channel non registered memory should be much faster for socket 939, especially with Hypertransport. I mean you won't notice much difference in games though, but if you need that extra performance advantage then wait for 939.
If you can wait until Mar 29, then wait. S939 will have quite a few improvements over the current S940/S754. Keep in mind though that we are talking here about a $400+ processor, since brand new products don't come cheap! On the other hand, if you are not patient or you can't spend that much money on a CPU, then you can build now, using a S754 A64.
