PSU OK w/ paperclip, dead without

hi,

i just replaced my MB and tried to fire the machine up. not a peep. no beeps, no fans spinning. nothing.

i did get a green lamp on the back of the power supply when plugging in.

i tried the green / black wire paper clip trick and that caused the DVD / CD unit to spin briefly, and the fan is spinning (relatively quietly).

when i go back to normal wiring, i go back to dead silent, no power up, with just a green lamp.

it's true that just before i tried the paper clip test, the green lamp failed to light up upon plugging in.

bad PSU?

Hi, I would try the board outside the case, only CPU and CPU fan installed, make sure that both 24 and 8-pin or 4-pin power cables are in place. If the fan still not spinning, then it's either a board or a power supply issue.

yes, I disconnected the dvd drive an hard drive, and there is no change.

what is the next step? hook it up to a different PSU?

If you have a spare one or you can borrow one...

Even passing the paper clip test does not 100% guarantee that the PSU will work so testing with another known working one will make sure.
