Hello,
black screen with power icon, batter charge icon, and fan running. Boots laptop when hooked to external monitor. Otherwise no screen. When hooked to monitor the laptop screen works as well as the exterior monitor?

How long have you had this issue?

While hooked to an external monitor, Why don't you try pressing the FN key (near bottom left of keyboard) and the F Key (usually has an icon of a monitor, sometimes it's located at F4 near the top of the keyboard).

It will adjust the screen's, otherwise your laptop screen just shorted out.
