Upgrade advice

My current setup is 3 years old now and can't really handle the latest games at nearly max settings. Here's my specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7 920 2.67 GHz
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 275
RAM: 6GB DDR3 Triple Channel
Mobo: ASUS P6T
Storage: WD Caviar 1TB

I want my PC to handle the latest games well at 1920x1080 for the foreseeable future. I was thinking of at least getting a GTX 660 Ti when its released in a few days.

I appreciate the help, thanks.

  1. The CPU is still great, indeed what you need is a new GPU. Possibly a slight CPU overclock to 3.5 GHz-ish.
  2. The GTX 660 should do it for you. But based on the review from 3D-GURU of leaked specs comparing the 660 to the 670 -

"Both share 28nm GK104 GPU and both have 1344 CUDA cores. Even the core clocks and memory clocks are same i.e. 915 MHz base clock, 980 MHz boost clock and 6008 MHz memory clock. Like its bigger brother, GTX 660 Ti will have 2 GB of memory but memory bus width is reduced from 256-bit to 192-bit; that results in around 25% decrease in memory bandwidth. Which agrees with a review in Tom's found here - http://www.tomshardware.com/news/geforce-660ti-nvidia-graphcis-card,16631.html listed (guessed) for approx. $50 less but I's rather have the memory bandwidth.

I'm not sure if you should just go with the 670. I see it here at newegg - EVGA 02G-P4-2670-KR GeForce GTX 670 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card At $400, VERY close to the 660 but with faster memory bandwidth so I'm a little confused. While both of them are pci-e 3.0 compliant you won't really lose but about 1% of speed using the 2.0

Either way you go Make sure your power supply is up to the challenge of the new card.
  3. Thanks for the tips guys.

I'll compare the 660 and 670 when we know the final price range and for how much I can get either in the EU.

The PSU is a Corsair HX850 though, so it should be more than enough.
