Ok, first of, what type of quad core 2.5ghz CPU you want to get? Amd or Intel? Then, you have to see if your current motherboard is compatible. If you could post what type of motherboard you have and what processor you want, then we can tell you if there is compatibility. If it is not compatible, you will need a new motherboard.
