Just found out about an alternative to Battlefield. Novalogics Joint
Operations.

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/ [...] index.html

I'm sure its a great game, but I don't think I'll be buying it. I
downloaded the 300mb demo, installed, arsed about changing the controls,
then tried to play online. Just like Battlefield theres the option of
playing over the net, LAN or single player against bots, although the
latter two can't be used on the demo.

There was just one slight problem, the demo has run out, or rather
Novalogic no longer host a server for the demo. Which in itself is only
annoying as its just the time wasted d/l i, but I got to thinking.
Battlefield is hosted on servers run by the public, where as (or at least
so it seems) JO is hosted entirely on Novalogics own servers which,
although this does allow for upto 150 people to be playing on one server,
means that if Novalogic goes bust, or decides to drop the game, then it
becomes impossible to play the game online.

Unless I've missed something, it seems a dumb way to do things.
