By "budget" I assume you refer to the Athlon 64 3000+. You can find a review here. To sum it up for you, this is an excellent processor for its price. It is as fast and sometimes even faster in games, when compared to the Pentium 4 3.2c and the only part where is slower is video encoding, but with much less money. If you need a new system now, the Athlon 64 3000+ is the CPU to get. Or if you don't mind, you could wait a few months for the Prescott/San Diego A64 to arrive, but don't forget that those will be quite expensive.

If you are into gamming and on a budget then probably the 3000+ of the 64s is you best solution and could most likely OC it to 3200+ speeds. The 3200+ is too expensive and will not be any change with performance and the FX is just simply not worth the price.

As for reviews, could do a google search for one but generally its numbers is much like the 3200.

Barton 2500+ @ 2200mhz (10x220 vcore @ 1.775)
Asus A7N8X Dlx 440 FSB

the only reason why P4s are better in video stuffs is that they use SSE2. AMD doesn't have any right to put that instructions in their cpus so if you're into video editing, just buy a 2.4C but if you're a hardcore gamer AND do video editing, buy Athlon64 3000+

buy a MSI mobo
Athlon64 3000+
kingston hyper x PC3200 2-2-2-5 256x2
sapphire radeon 9800 pro
a WD SE 120GB or a WD raptor 74GB
audigy 2
a thermaltake venus2(?) hsf

I assume you already have a case, psu, cd-rw, dvd drive, and etc.

It might cost you about or less than $1000:)

I'm an AMD FANBOY. Intel folks, watch out!

AMD contains SSE2 code they bought the right to do so . teh reason intel is faster in video is the software is compiled with intel I686 options. this makes the software work faster on the intel pipeline. if you use opensource video compresion tools under linux and you will see the AMD is faster. you just have to compile the software for the processer but in the windows world you will never beable to make "your" software better.

In the windows world you will also have to get on your knees pleading for them to allow you the right to change your own computer components.
