Is there any pocket sized digital camera that shows a live histogram before
the image is taken? My Canon A520 shows the histogram after the image is
taken. The Olympus C5500 has a live histogram, but its bigger than pocket
size.

The Sony W1, and I suspect the other Wx series, has
a live histogram mode prior to shooting. It is a very
pocketable camera.

Could you not just take one image with the A520 and then delete it if
needed?

Of course you can. You could take pictures by guessing the
exposure until you got it right if you want. The "live"
histogram is just another exposure aid, to be used or
ignored as the photographer sees fit. I don't miss it much
when I use a camera without it - like any SLR say - but I do
use it on cameras that offer it.

A quick check of the most recently reviewed cameras at dpreview.com show
that 2 out 3 of the compact cameras (Sony DSC-W7 and Panasonic FX-9)
have a live histogram, and the 3rd (Canon SD400) does not.

The histogram shows how much to change the exposure. What you want are
values across the entire display. And, if you have a spike at the bright
end, your image may be seriously overexposed. On the other hand, if there
are no values past the midpoint, for example, your image is underexposed by
two stops or more.

In addition, with a digital camera, you don't have to wait until the roll
gets developed to find all this out.

Well, I haven't actually seen one to be honest, but it was the only camera I
could think of that had the histogram function (sometimes you have to trade
and maybe size is something that would have to be traded here). I wouldn't
trade image quality for a histogram, tho' and if the camera's too big as
well then it's a no-go.

And I have deep pockets - and short arms, I've been told.

On the other hand, you might just want to learn the principles of
photography and not waste time with histograms.

Yes, that would help.

"Values across the entire display" suggests to me a rather boringly lighted
photograph. A low-key portrait may be heavily weighted to the left, and
because of the TINY SCALE of the camera histogram, it may not even register
the important facial highlights at all.

I've never been too interested in creating 18% gray images.

Not quite. If you shoot a contrastry scene then you will have values
across the display and then you get to choose whether you want to lose
shadows or highlights. If it's a cloudy low-contrast day then you'll
likely see a spike in the middle of the display with little at the
ends.
