How do I stop the clock "screensaver" from appearing? I would rather be able
to see the signal strength and battery life. Looked thru all the menus but
maybe its not possible?

Don't think it's possible. Phone is attempting to save battery life by
turning off colour display.

But what ... is it good for?

Is the wrong answer. That relates to the screen saver, which fills
the display and therefore doesn't show what the OP wants to see
(signal and battery indicators).
The clock is there to reduce the battery drain from the colour screen
and can't be turned off/removed.

One question from me - I understand that the clock screensaver cant be
turned off (and for battery reasons), but would there be a battery hit if
the colour screen switched off, but still showed signal/battery lifer
indicators (instead off showing the clock). Would it make any difference to
the battery if instead of the clock it showed these indicators (still with
colour screen / backlight off?

What I find most annoying is that the screensaver kicks in even if you
have unread SMS messages or missed calls waiting. With my 6100, the
clock doesn't appear if an SMS or call has been received, so you're
able to notice them immediately just by glancing at the screen.

Yes, agreed. I've occasionally missed a text arriving and not noticed
that there is a small envelope icon that scrolls down with it, on the
right-hand side of the clock display. Not sure what happens when a
call is missed, as I haven't missed any yet, but it would be better if
the clock didn't cut in in these circumstances.

The 6100 actually has indicators on the 'clock' power saving
screen-saver, to show a missed-call, and messages received, etc.

You can't. A TFT colour-screen is quite a power thirsty item, and the
*minimal* black-and-white clock screensaver kicks in to save battery life.
If it had the screen showing a full colour image continously, the
battery would only last a couple of hours(if that).
If you want a phone with no 'clock' screensaver, then you'll have to get a
phone with a *black-and-white* screen.

I've taken a closer look at how this works, and it does seem he's
right.
If you have the screensaver turned off, the display is replaced with
the clock after just 2 minutes. However, if you select an image from
the galley to use as the screensaver you can then set the timeout to
be anything up to 60 minutes. During that 60 minutes, the signal and
battery bars are displayed, which is what the original poster was
asking for. OK, it only works up to a maximum of 60 minutes, but
that's better than the 2 minutes you get with the screensaver set to
off.

Not on mine. If I receive a missed call, the screen displays it
indefinitely and the clock screensaver never appears.

I tried to bvy one of these models off of Ebay and the gvy selling them was
weird. Wanted me to Western Union him the money. Very odd if yov ask me. I

model, bvt have a real hard time finding it arovnd here in the USA, NJ.
Also, I don't want to pay $500 for a phone that will be $100 in a few
months. Any svggestions?

Thanks Chris, this is exactly what I wanted to find out!
