Thanks for the pointer to this report.

The reviewer (Mark Kay) says the 24-105/4 is better than the 24-70/2.8
from 35-70mm; almost as good as a 35/1.4 prime. No 50/1.4 test done.

So this implies the best companion lens is the 70-200/2.8 rather than
the 100-400/4.5-5.6, otherwise there's a quality gap between 70 and 100.

To live with vignetting and/or light fall-off at 24mm, aren't there
photoshop plugins that brighten the corner gradients?

Yup. PTLens (free) can do this, though I don't believe its
vignetting correction is automated (it has a database of lens
characteristics so it can automatically correct curvilinear
distortion based on the lens focal length in the EXIF data).

DxO has a program (not sure if it can run as a Photoshop
plugin) that takes this concept even farther, correcting CA
automatically (again, based on the lens and focal length used)
and I think it also automatically corrects vignetting.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were others, too.

Thanks for the info.

Sometimes vignetting can be a good thing! Recently I received
a photo with blue sky where light fall-off occurred, and
washed-out white sky elsewhere. Did a dropper and bucket-fill
and now the image looks much better. :-)

Photoshop CS2 can fix all that.
