is it true that with RAID i can use two hard drives one being the mirror of the other and read files at twice the speed
if this is a stupid question forgive me
i'm a bit clueless

In order to do both you need four hard drives. You can only do one or the other with two hard drives and it's recommended that you have a RAID controller to support that.

I use to have raid 0 until one of my drives crashed. They were pretty quick. I now have raid 1 and it is allot slower than raid 0. Raid 0 will run allot faster than raid 1.
