Need help with a friend's computer

So the story so far is that my friend is using and older, pre-built Dell Optiplex 330. He and I are not experts by any means on computer hardware, and need to find which motherboards would fit in the case. I would also like to know if it is even smart to try and upgrade his computer? He and I plan on building PC's for gaming soon but he needs a simple back-up computer that runs well.
