Refresh rate on the monitor is different. It will only make your games look smoother and less screen tearing.

If you have a game that goes above 120 frames per second, you can use Vsync so that the video cards framerate matches the refresh rate of the monitor. (You will see reduced screen tearing).

To answer your question.

If you currently have Vsync on with 60hz your graphics card will be limited to 60fps,
With a 120hz monitor you will be limited to 120 fps. So yes your graphics card will end up working harder and produce more heat.

However if you normally play with vsync off then it will make no difference what so ever.
