Hi im going to upgrade my PC for Guild Wars 2 and guess the GPU is the first place to start though tempted to upgrade CPU/Mobo . My specs

INTEL CORE 2 DUO E8500 3.16Ghz
MOBO- 4 CORE 1600GLAN
4GB RAM
GeForce 9600GT
ARCTIC COOLING FREEZER 7 Pro CPU
VALUE 400W PSU
WINDOWS HOME VISTA 32

Looking to spend maybe £300 to upgrade it and have read although old the HD6850 1GB is very good and a big upgrade for me. That will be the biggest improvement i guess but id need a new PSU im thinking but would i need another fan/cooler? Im new to this so sorry if its been asked before or isnt phrased correctly. As for CPU upgrade is mine still any good? I know its dual core not quad but ive heard mixed reports some saying its still a very decent CPU others that its old and a quad would be a big improvement. I know the Mobo is old and not great so would be better off getting a CPU/Mobo bundle with ram right? Was told by a friend that AMD PHENOM II X4 965 BE would be excellent for a base for gaming which is all i use it for. I play online mmos at 1920x1080 resolution if thats important. Can anyone suggest some improvements/help regarding GPU upgrades and the CPU/mobo please.
thanks Gary

I dont like the sound of that "Value" 400W PSU. Can you give us some specifications on that PSU? Like the amps on the 12V rail(s)?

To me this is the first thing to look at.

Thats literally what its said on the list when i bought it ,so yeh thats all the info i have .Never opened the case so have no idea sorry. Guess thats gonna be 1st thing to replace when i get new GPU then... Hd8650 or hd8670 1 or 2 gb not sure only play on one monitor at 1920x1080 so just need 1gb right?

If it were a more credible 400W, like the CX430, I would feel much better about recommending the 6870 or even the 6850. But I can't be sure on recommending either. If you upgrade both together, you should be fine.

gpu and psu for £300?
Antec High Current Gamer 520W PSU £55.82 Inc VAT
XFX 7870 Core Edition £227.74 Inc VAT

that should put you right there until you upgrade that cpu,mob and ram. you can look at an i3 with a h67 motherboard for an inexpensive change. if you are going to play BF3 multiplayer maps or other cpu intensive games where more than two core can be helpful; an i5-2400 is fine.

Thanks for the replies, i meant £300 for the cpu/mobo + gpu though. Id be willing to maybe go a little higher £350 if neccessary. So Hd6870 - £120
Psu- £30-40 550w??
so really £150-£200 for a cpu,mob- thats if for that price i can get a decent upgrade from the E8500?

Gigabyte SKT-1155 H77M-D3H £66.98
Corsair CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 XMS3 8GB £37.50
Intel Pentium G860 £65.98
THAT cpu, mobo and ram upgrade is £170.46
i like that board, for a microATX to have 4 DIMM slots is rare. that is my biggest complaint against that form factor; they usually have only 2 DIMMS. however a dual core, while performing well, will limit you in CPU intensive games like skyrim and multiplayer maps in BF3. i am also sticking to my recommendation for a PSU, getting a low wattage or not so great quality PSU will come back to haunt you in the long run.
Antec High Current Gamer 520W £55.82
now the total is £226.28
if you want a 6870 thats ok, a gtx 560 is a few bucks more and gives a little more performance and a 7770 is much cheaper but doesn't perform as well.
XFX HD 6870 DD cooling 1Gb £118.42
TOTAL £344.70

do not cheap out on the PSU, i will have to swim across the pond and yell at you!

you CAN get this but it will limit using it in the future if you want to upgrade that graphics card:
Corsair CX 430W V2 ATX2.2 80 PLUS £35.99
TOTAL £324.87

I would go with looniams suggestions. That is a very solid build. I have one of the Celeron G530's, which was $50, and it plays almost everything I have tried it with. Not sure about BF3 multiplayer on the highest graphics though. Other than that, it should be fine.
